New to cannabis, or just want a refresher on what these words actually mean? Here's a plain-language guide to flower types — and why the label is only part of the story.
Indica and sativa originally referred to two different cannabis plant species with distinct growth patterns — indica plants are short and bushy, sativa plants are tall and lanky. Over time, these terms came to be shorthand for expected effects, but most flower sold today is the result of decades of crossbreeding, so the line is much blurrier than the labels suggest.
Indica-leaning strains are traditionally described as more relaxing and body-focused — often associated with evening or wind-down use. That said, two different "indica" strains can feel quite different from each other depending on their specific chemical makeup.
Sativa-leaning strains are traditionally described as more energizing, uplifting, or cerebral — often associated with daytime or social use. As with indicas, individual results vary widely from strain to strain.
A hybrid is a cross between indica and sativa genetics, bred to land somewhere between the two — or to combine specific traits from each. Because most modern flower has mixed ancestry, "hybrid" is the most common label you'll see on our shelves.
Rather than relying on the indica/sativa/hybrid label alone, consider asking about a strain's THC and CBD percentages and its terpene profile — the aromatic compounds that influence both flavor and effect. Our budtenders are happy to walk you through what's in stock and match it to what you're looking for, whether that's something to help you unwind after work or something for a daytime activity.

Indica strains are traditionally associated with relaxing, body-focused effects, while sativa strains are traditionally associated with more energizing, uplifting effects. In practice, a strain's effects depend heavily on its specific cannabinoid and terpene profile, not just the indica/sativa label.
A hybrid is a cross between indica and sativa genetics, often bred to balance or combine effects from both. Most flower available today is technically a hybrid to some degree.
Start by thinking about when and why you plan to use it (daytime vs. evening, social vs. winding down), then ask our budtenders for recommendations based on THC/CBD percentages and terpene profiles, not just the strain name.
